The academic
facilities consist of a cluster of six classrooms with a student conference
room, library, computer lab, and photography workshop, along with administrative
offices. On-campus housing is provided for faculty and students.
The
classrooms are always open and just a few steps away from the student
residence. Because most full-time faculty members live on campus, students
can obtain extra help with their assignments and continue classroom conversation
beyond the scheduled program.
There are no telephones or televisions in the rooms to distract the students.
This is the atmosphere that prompted a well-known art director to comment,
during a visit: "Altos de Chavon is what art schools should be."
Apartments include living room and bedroom areas, a complete kitchen,
a bathroom, and a terrace. Each is furnished with a couch and chairs,
beds, drawing tables, and stools. Students supply their own linens and
kitchen utensils.
