Interior design majors work individually and in teams to create technical and aesthetic solutions that transform their design concepts into three-dimensional reality. By studying the construction methods and materials of industrial design, furniture design, color and lighting, and landscaping, well-trained graduates equip themselves for the fast-paced world of residential and commercial design. Drawing and drafting are fundamental skills for the interior planner. Students learn the basic techniques of drafting in scale, setting dimensions, and preparing layouts, then extend these principles to express design concepts graphically through detailed blueprints, models, and computer-aided images. High-focus courses explore the emotional/harmonic properties of color, lighting techniques and their effects, furniture construction and arrangement, and landscaping solutions to spatial and design concerns. More practical course components aid students in preparing detailed schedules and construction documents and establishing sound business relations with clients.
Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on extending concepts and materials beyond the status quo. Student teams are encouraged to create viable, yet nontraditional solutions to such problematic design features as alcoves, windows, terraces, and entryways. Wood, glass, fabric, plastics, metals, and found objects are explored for their suitable and surprising applications.
Interior design majors complete thefollowing courses during the fall and spring semesters.
